Friday, September 11, 2026 — Go First

This Week in Review

The week started in Egypt, on the last night of slavery, with God giving rescue instructions to people who had never kept a single one of his laws. Rescue first, list later. Tuesday the psalmist showed us what happens downstream of a rescue like that: a heart that actually wants the list, the way someone out of debt keeps the budget that freed them. Wednesday Paul handed us the one account that never closes, the standing debt to love one another. And Thursday Jesus got specific about the hardest payment on that debt, the private conversation with the person who hurt you.

Four texts, and every one of them has somebody moving toward somebody.

Thread of Grace

This week’s thread of grace: grace moves toward people. It does not wait to be approached.

In Exodus, God moves toward slaves who have nothing to offer him. No track record, no law kept. He comes to them in the dark and gets them out. In Psalm 119, the rescued psalmist moves toward God’s ways, not to earn what he already has but because he already has it. In Romans, love keeps moving toward the neighbor, because the debt of love is the one account that never closes. And in Matthew 18, Jesus puts the last step in your hands: when something breaks between you and another person, you move. Even when you are the one who got hurt. Especially then.

That is what separates grace from fairness. Fairness waits for the guilty party to crawl back. Grace goes first, because God went first with us.

So here is the weekend assignment, before Sunday comes. Name the one relationship you have been avoiding. The sibling you haven’t called. The friend who said the thing three years ago. Send the text or make the call, with no agenda except repair. You don’t need the perfect words. You need to move toward.

Guided Prayer

Father, you crossed the whole distance to get to me. You moved first, in the dark, before I had anything to show you. Now there is a small distance in front of me, a name, a number I could dial today, and I have been waiting for them to move. Give me your kind of love, the kind that goes first. Carry this thread into Sunday with me, and make me a person who moves toward. Amen.
