Friday, August 21, 2026 | The Mountain, Week 3
This Week in Review
This week we climbed the mountain not to see glory, but to receive direction.
Habakkuk climbed up to his watchtower with a complaint and stood at his post until God spoke — and God told him to write the vision plainly, because it would surely come. The psalmist of Psalm 121 looked up at the hills and asked the question every pilgrim has to ask: is my help up there? — and answered with relief that no, the help comes from the LORD who made every hill, the one who watches over us as we come and go. Paul wrote from a Roman prison and described the Christian life as a sprint toward a future Christ chose for him: one thing, eyes forward, the past behind. And on a Galilean mountain, three sleepy disciples stood inside a cloud and heard the Father say, in two short sentences, what the rest of the New Testament is one long footnote on: This is my Son, my Chosen One. Listen to him.

Thread of Grace
Here is the thread, as plainly as I can say it: vision is not the same as ambition.
Ambition is the future you build for yourself out of what you’ve already imagined. Vision is what God gives you when you stop talking and listen. Habakkuk did not invent his vision — he climbed up and waited until God handed it to him. The psalmist did not manufacture his help — he looked up past the hills and remembered who made them. Paul did not pick his calling — Christ picked him on the road and the rest of his life was running to catch up. And on the mountain in Luke 9, the Father did not give the three disciples a strategic plan. He gave them an instruction. Listen to him.
That’s the difference, and most of us live on the wrong side of it. We have plenty of ambition. We have less vision than we’d like to admit. We’re busy. We’re productive. We’re tired. And we wake up at fifty and notice that everything we’ve built was the right size for our own imagination, which turns out to be a small box. The mountain is where God offers a future big enough for the life you were actually made for, and the only way to receive it is to climb up, stand watch, and listen.
Week 2 we beheld glory. This week we discovered that the same God who lets us see him also gives us a future we couldn’t have invented. The mountain doesn’t just change how we see God. It changes where we’re going. And the people coming back down the slope this Sunday will be carrying something they did not bring up with them — a vision written plainly enough to run with.
This Sunday, we put words to it together. Come up willing to hear.
Guided Prayer
God, this week you’ve told me to climb, stand watch, lift my eyes, press on, and listen — and I’m starting to see that all of those are one instruction. Forgive me for building my own future out of my own imagination. Forgive me for confusing busyness with calling. I don’t want my ambition. I want your vision. Write it plainly. I’ll wait for it. And when it comes, I’ll run. Amen.
