Friday, August 14, 2026 | The Mountain, Week 2
This Week in Review
This week we climbed and discovered who was waiting at the top.
Moses walked up Sinai and disappeared into the cloud — God close enough to feel, too bright to see, speaking on the seventh day. The psalmist looked at every mountain in the world and said the LORD reigns, and the mountains melt like wax in front of him. Paul wrote to a church being seduced by impressive preachers and said the real glory is unveiled now, not fading, and we are changed by gazing at it. And Jesus took three friends up a hill and pulled back his clothes long enough for them to see what he actually looks like — and the Father interrupted Peter’s construction plans with one sentence: Listen to him.
The Week’s Scripture Texts
- Monday: Exodus 24:15–18
- Tuesday: Psalm 97:1–6
- Wednesday: 2 Corinthians 3:7–18
- Thursday: Matthew 17:1–8
Thread of Grace
Here is the thread for the week, as straight as I can name it: glory is not something we manufacture. Glory is something we behold — and beholding remakes us.
Every text said it in a different key. Exodus said the glory rests on the mountain and you walk into the cloud. The psalm said the glory is so great it melts the mountains. Paul said the glory is unveiled in Christ and you are changed by looking at it. Matthew said the glory is on Jesus and the Father’s only instruction is listen to him. Every text. Same thread. The Christian life is contemplative before it is anything else. You do not stage the moment. You do not control the moment. You stand inside it and let it work on you.
Last week we climbed because God invited us up. This week we found out what is at the top: a holiness that will not fit in our boxes, a glory we cannot control, a transfiguration that happens to us when we stop talking and start looking. Peter wanted to build shelters and pin the moment to the wall. The Father said no. You don’t pin glory down. Glory pins you down, and then it remakes you slowly into the image of the one you are looking at.
So here is the bottom line, and it is the line I want you to carry into Sunday: you do not leave the mountain unchanged. Not if you really climbed. Not if you really stood there long enough to be quiet. Casual faith never gets remade because casual faith never stops talking. But the heart that goes up, stands in the cloud, and listens — that heart comes back down different. The glow may not be on your face the way it was on Moses’, but it will be on your patience, on your prayer, on the way you handle the people you live with this weekend. Beholding remakes you. Always has. Always will.
Guided Prayer
God, this week you have not let me keep you small. You have shown me cloud and fire, melting mountains, an unveiled face, a Son who shines like the sun. Forgive me for the casual faith I came in with. Forgive me for the building projects I keep starting at the top of every mountain you take me up. Today I am quiet. Today I am looking. Make me, slowly, into the image of the one I am beholding. I cannot manufacture this. I can only behold you — and trust that beholding is enough. Amen.
