Sunday, May 24, 2026 | Not So Ordinary, Week 4
Where Are We Headed This Week?
Most people don’t walk around feeling unqualified. They walk around feeling ordinary. Average. Like the big stuff — the calling, the impact, the God-actually-using-you part — was meant for somebody else. The people up front. The ones who have it together. Not you, with the job and the bills and the kids and the same Tuesday you had last Tuesday.
This Sunday is Pentecost, and Pentecost is God’s answer to that exact feeling. The Spirit didn’t come down on a stage. He came down in a room full of nobodies — fishermen, a tax collector, a few women, the mother of Jesus. People with no title, no platform, no plan. And he turned them into the people who would carry the whole thing forward.
That’s where we’re headed this week. Four texts, one point: the Spirit takes what looks ordinary — ordinary people, ordinary words, an ordinary room — and lights it on fire. Not to make a show. To make witnesses.
A Deeper Look
Here’s the lie most of us have made peace with: God uses certain people, and I’m not one of them. So we keep our heads down. We leave the spiritual stuff to the spiritual people. We tell ourselves we’d help, we’d speak up, we’d step out — if we were more. More gifted, more confident, more put-together, more whatever.
But read the texts this week and watch who God reaches for. Two men in Numbers who weren’t even at the meeting. A psalm that says the same breath holding the whole creation together is the breath in your lungs. A room of scared disciples who walk out bold. Not one of them was extraordinary. What changed wasn’t their ability. It was that the Spirit showed up.
So the real question isn’t whether you’re qualified. You’re not, and neither was anyone God has ever used. The question is whether you’re available. Fire that stays in the fireplace keeps one room warm and does nothing else. The whole point of Pentecost is that the fire got out. This week is about letting it.

Weekly Practices
- Each morning this week, don’t ask God to send someone more qualified. Ask one question and then go looking for the answer: Where are you already working around me today, and how do I step in? Then keep your eyes open at work, at home, in line at the store.
- Pick one ordinary spot — your job, your kitchen table, the guy you pass every morning — and this week say the true thing you usually keep to yourself. The encouragement. The testimony. The offer to pray right there. Small, specific, out loud. Once is enough to start.
