This Week in Review

We started Monday in Athens, standing next to Paul in a city full of altars. A crowd that was guessing. He pointed at the altar to an unknown God and said: that one. He’s not far from any one of you. He’s the reason you’re searching at all.

Tuesday we sat with a psalmist on the other side of a hard season. Fire and flood. People riding over their heads. And from that vantage point, looking back: he kept us. Not comfortable. Not untested. Kept. Our feet didn’t slip, not because the ground was smooth, but because the hands were there.

Wednesday, Peter told pressured, scattered people to be ready to explain the hope that is in them. Not the hope they’ve generated — the hope already living there. The resurrection is the hinge. It happened whether we feel it this week or not.

Thursday, Jesus in the upper room the night before everything. I will not leave you as orphans. The ground was about to move. He said it before any of them could feel it. Not a comfort for a difficult moment — a permanent statement about who you are.

The Week’s Scripture Texts

  • Monday: Acts 17:22-31
  • Tuesday: Psalm 66:8-20
  • Wednesday: 1 Peter 3:13-22
  • Thursday: John 14:15-21

Thread of Grace

Every text this week said the same thing in a different room.

God is not far. The Spirit is in you. You are not an orphan. He kept our feet from slipping.

The thread is proximity. Not God as distant sovereign making decisions from far away — God as present, close, already there. Already holding. The hope Peter describes is inside you. The helper Jesus promised is inside you. The God Paul preaches is not far from any one of us.

Most of us spend our energy gripping. White-knuckling hope through a hard week. Working up enough faith to get to the other side. But that’s backward from what every text this week says. The hope is already present. The Spirit is already close. You don’t have to hold it. It holds you.

Held, not holding. That’s the thread that ran through this week.

Sunday Tony preaches on what it looks like to walk out of here as people who are actually held — not louder or flashier, just lighter. People who let go of the grip long enough to find that something underneath them didn’t move.

Guided Prayer

Lord, this week we looked at four different rooms — Athens, the psalms, a scattered church, an upper room. All of them in the middle of something hard. All of them held by a God who was closer than they could feel. I want to trust that more. I don’t want to spend another week white-knuckling something you’re already carrying. Hold me. Hold the people I love. And when someone near me is still building altars to unknowns, let me be the person who can say quietly: I know who that is. Amen.
