The Short of It

This week was about thirst. Israel thirsted in the wilderness. The psalm warned against hardened hearts. Paul reminded us that peace with God holds steady in suffering. A Samaritan woman discovered that the Messiah was sitting beside her well.

Thirst is not failure. It is exposure. And what it exposes is not weakness alone — but need. The good news of this week is simple: God does not scold thirst. He satisfies it.

Exodus 17:1–7 (Monday)

Israel panics in the wilderness and questions whether God is still among them. God responds not with rejection, but with water from a rock — provision in the dry place.

Psalm 95 (Tuesday)

The psalm looks back on that wilderness moment and warns, “Do not harden your hearts.” Thirst can either soften us toward trust or close us off in resistance.

Romans 5:1–11 (Wednesday)

Because we are justified by faith, we have peace with God. Suffering does not mean abandonment. Hope grows even in difficulty because God’s love has already been proven.

Jesus meets a woman shaped by longing and offers living water. Satisfaction is not found in repeated return to old wells, but in relationship with the One who gives life.

It may be the very place He intends to meet you.

Grace does not demand performance before it flows.

It springs up in the dry ground of honest need.

Before Sunday, identify one “well” you return to for quick relief — distraction, control, approval, comfort.

Instead of reaching for it immediately, pause and pray:

“Jesus, be my living water here.”

Let the pause be your act of trust.

Father,
You know where I feel dry.
You know the places I have tried to satisfy myself.
Forgive my hardened heart when I assume You are absent.
Give me softness again.
Let Your Spirit be living water within me.
Meet me in my need — not with scolding,
but with Yourself.
