1 Corinthians 1:18–31

Key Verse

“This foolish plan of God is wiser than the wisest of human plans,
and God’s weakness is stronger than the greatest of human strength.”
(1 Corinthians 1:25, NLT)

A Devotional Moment

We are drawn to what looks strong, confident, and successful. We trust voices that sound certain and systems that promise results. Even in faith, we can quietly assume that God’s work should look impressive—clear wins, visible power, and undeniable influence.

But Paul names an uncomfortable truth: the center of our faith is a cross. An instrument of shame. A symbol of obvious failure. If we’re honest, it’s not the image we would choose to represent authority.

And yet, Paul insists that this is exactly where God’s wisdom is most clearly revealed.

The Short of It

God’s authority is revealed through self-giving love, not dominance or control.

The Long of It

Paul is writing to a church impressed by status, intellect, and influence. They valued eloquence, spiritual prestige, and visible success. Paul introduces the cross into that mindset. He presents it not as a problem to explain away, but as the very center of God’s saving work.

The message of the cross disrupts every assumption about power. It reveals a God who does not coerce belief. He does not force obedience. Instead, He gives Himself fully for the sake of love. What looks like weakness is actually strength that refuses to harm to win.

This is the authority of Jesus: not control through fear, but transformation through sacrifice. Seeing clearly means allowing God to redefine what strength truly looks like.

Setting the Scene

Historical Context

Corinth was a culture obsessed with rhetoric, philosophy, and social hierarchy. Power and wisdom were measured by influence and appearance.

Literary Context

This passage forms part of Paul’s opening argument against division in the church. He confronts the tendency to elevate leaders, ideas, and achievements over the gospel itself.

Theological Context

The cross reveals the nature of God’s power—one that saves through humility, love, and self-giving grace rather than force.
