Tuesday, December 9, 2025 — Psalm 72:1–7, 18–19
The Short of It
A vision of a king who rules with justice, protects the vulnerable, and brings flourishing and peace to the earth.
The Long of It
Psalm 72 imagines the world as it should be under God’s appointed king. This king acts with God’s own heart—defending the poor, rescuing the oppressed, and ensuring justice where injustice has taken root. His reign causes righteousness to flourish, and peace becomes as steady and life-giving as gentle rain on thirsty ground.
This psalm is both a prayer and a prophecy. It reflects the longings of Israel’s heart for a righteous ruler. It ultimately points to Jesus, the perfect King. His reign brings healing, justice, and blessing to all nations. Under His rule, people thrive, communities flourish, and creation is renewed.
Context: Setting the Scene
Historical Context
Psalm 72 is traditionally associated with Solomon or written as a coronation psalm for David’s lineage. It reflects ancient hopes for a king who would embody God’s justice and bring stability and blessing to Israel. Nations often experienced violent and exploitative leadership. At such times, this psalm paints a radical picture of a king. His authority is rooted in compassion and righteousness.
Literary Context
As a royal psalm, Psalm 72 blends prayer, praise, and prophetic imagery. It is placed at the end of Book II of the Psalms and functions almost like a benediction. The king described exceeds any historical king’s performance, pointing readers beyond earthly rulers to the Messiah. Its themes of justice, mercy, and blessing echo throughout the prophetic books and into the New Testament.
Theological Context
The psalm emphasizes God’s heart for the oppressed, revealing that just leadership reflects God’s own character. Theologically, it points to a kingdom where righteousness and peace work together to bring flourishing. In Christian interpretation, this king is ultimately Christ. His reign extends to all nations. His righteousness brings healing to the world.
NLT Scripture
‘Give your love of justice to the king, O God, and righteousness to the king’s son. Help him judge your people in the right way; let the poor always be treated fairly. May the mountains yield prosperity for all, and may the hills be fruitful. Help him to defend the poor, to rescue the children of the needy, and to crush their oppressors. May they fear you as long as the sun shines, as long as the moon remains in the sky. Yes, forever! May the king’s rule be refreshing like spring rain on freshly cut grass, like the showers that water the earth. May all the godly flourish during his reign. May there be abundant prosperity until the moon is no more. Praise the Lord God, the God of Israel, who alone does such wonderful things. Praise his glorious name forever! Let the whole earth be filled with his glory. Amen and amen! ‘
